The band put together a four song demo and started sending it out, eventually to be signed to Madonna’s label, Maverick. (Deftones often gets asked in interviews if they have met Madonna and how involved she is in the band’s music, to which they always reply that Madonna is a “cool chick” but she doesn’t really meddle with the bands’ style of music.) The band built up their fan base by touring with bands such as Ozzy Osbourne and KoRn, selling thousands of albums without much marketing or publicity.
