The question in computing has become, “Does size and weight really matter or is it more important to have a powerful workhorse computer that allows you to fit every piece of software and save as many movies as will fit on your productivity machine?” Another issue may be whether the small sizes are more concerning or if the light-weight portability is the focal matter. I think the accessibility of different types of portable computers these days lets us truly personalize our productivity machines into something that works for all of us and doesn’t have to be generic for the world.
The announcement of the brand new macbookair by Apple has really given us a choice with the size and weight and what kind of computer we drag around with us when traveling. At less than 3 pounds and less than an inch thick, we don’t have to strain our shoulders every time we go on a trip. It has a 13 inch display and a normal keyboard. Who wouldn’t be interested? This is the very attribute I have been wanting.
When I first observed the advert for the MacBook Air with a slim, easy to transport portable computer coming out of that manila envelope, I was simply shocked. Now, that’s the choice I’ve been seeking for so long. Now it doesn’t have to be an act of God to take my laptop with me any longer! No extra bag that can weigh likely as much as the laptop computer, no more grimacing, no longer taking up so much extra room! What a marvel!
The age old question of whether size is relevant is in front of us now and my answer, when it comes to a small laptop is a reverberating, “yes, Yes, YES!” Size does matter as well as weight. For me and my computer smaller is as good as it gets.
