James Brown: a funky legend!
James Brown, born in South Carolina , was a north-american singer, composer and music producer who was known as one of the most important and influential personalities of 20th century music.
He was a prolific songwriter and producer, who had a major role in the evolution of gospel and rhythm and blues into funk and soul. He is actually considered the father of funk.
He also had influence on many other musical genres, like rock, jazz, reggae, disco, hip hop and dance and electronic music in general.
James brown died at the age of 73, in the 25th December 2006,in Atlanta Georgia , suffering of severe pneumonia.
Some curious details about James Brown’s career:
- as a way to ease the social tension created with the murder of Martin Luther King in 1968, James Brown went on the air in a Boston radio station and sang all night, so the spirits could chill for a while.
- He abandoned school at 15, and entered the band “Three Swanees”, where he played drums and sang Rhythm and Blues.
- James Brown recorded more that 50 albums, and had 119 success singles featured in Hit Parades. Every album he recorded between 1960 and 1977 was in those years’ top 100.
- Some of his nicknames are: Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother Nº1 and Mr Dinamite
- James Brown was known for his frenetic dancing at stage and for constantly changing his suits at shows and concerts.
- He recorded more than 80 songs throughout his career. Naturally entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and won a Grammy Award in 1992
- Besides his musical achievements, James Brown also built a successful business empire, that included several radio stations and his own production company.he had an extensive roll of cars and even his own airplane. James Brown had the fame of being one of the hardest working people in the music industry.
- Until the 5th February, 40 days after his death, James Brown’s body hadn’t yet been buried, because of terrible family disputes over who would be his heirs.
